The 13 Best Plastic Surgeons in Sydney

In Australia, only doctors with specialist registration in plastic surgery, usually Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in plastic surgery, can call themselves specialist plastic surgeons. Other doctors can still offer cosmetic procedures, so the title is worth checking. Sydney's plastic surgeons differ mainly in focus: some concentrate on breasts, faces or eyelids, while others also treat skin cancer, hands and children.

This guide lists surgeons who state their FRACS or specialist registration, with their main procedures, hospitals and rooms from Randwick to Bella Vista, Gregory Hills and Miranda.

How to choose Plastic Surgeons in Sydney

  1. Check the public registerSearch the surgeon's name on the AHPRA register. It shows specialist registration in plastic surgery and any conditions on their practice.
  2. Choose someone who does your procedure oftenAsk how many of your procedure the surgeon performs each year and ask to see before and after photos of patients with a similar starting point.
  3. Ask where the surgery takes placeConfirm that the hospital or day surgery is licensed and accredited, who gives the anaesthetic and whether an overnight stay is included.
  4. Budget for the whole processA full quote covers the surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital, garments and follow-up visits. Ask what happens, and what it costs, if revision surgery is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral to see a plastic surgeon?

For cosmetic surgery, yes. Since July 2023, Medical Board of Australia guidelines require a referral, usually from a GP, two consultations before surgery, one of them with the surgeon, and a cooling-off period of seven days for adults before surgery can be booked.

How much does plastic surgery cost in Sydney?

Costs vary widely with the procedure, the surgeon's fee, the anaesthetist, the hospital and the length of stay. Cosmetic surgery is not covered by Medicare or private health insurance, while some reconstructive or medically necessary procedures can be. Ask for a written, itemised quote after your consultation.

What is the difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon?

A specialist plastic surgeon has completed accredited training in plastic and reconstructive surgery and holds specialist registration, usually with FRACS. Doctors without surgical specialist training can offer cosmetic procedures but, since 2023, cannot call themselves surgeons. Checking the AHPRA register settles the question in a minute.
