How Sydney10 picks the businesses on every list

How Sydney10 builds each ranking: a search across Greater Sydney, a lasting local reputation, confirmed details, quality and a scheduled review.

Sydney is big, and most people choose a café, a dentist or a tradie close to where they live or work. Our rankings take that seriously: they aim to reflect the whole city, not only its best-known postcodes, and to point you towards businesses you can rely on. Each list follows five steps.

  1. Looking across Greater Sydney

Every category starts with a broad search, from the Northern Beaches and the Eastern Suburbs to the Hills District, the Sutherland Shire and the south-west. A standout in Penrith, Liverpool or Hornsby is considered alongside the names that already fill the inner-city lists.

  2. A reputation locals stand by

We look for businesses that Sydneysiders have relied on for a long time, where customers come back and tell their friends, and where the same strengths keep being mentioned over the years. Opening-week hype is not the same as loyalty. A strong start is welcome, but staying power is what earns a place.

  3. Confirming the details

Before anything goes live, we establish that the business is still trading at its listed address, that its phone line and website work, and that the trading hours we show are right, including weekends and public holidays where they differ.

  4. Every trade has its own test

For a restaurant it is the food and the welcome, for an electrician punctuality and safe, tidy work, for a real estate agent honest communication with buyers, sellers and tenants. We look for consistency in those essentials rather than polish or clever marketing.

  5. A scheduled second look

Publishing a ranking is not the end of the job. Each list goes back into review on a fixed schedule, when we check again that every business is trading and still deserves its place, and remove or replace those that no longer do.

Help from readers

Sydney's suburbs change quickly, and locals often notice before we do. If a business has shut, relocated or deserves a spot, email info@sydney10.com with its name and suburb, and we will check it out. Even a one-line email helps.

Beaches, holidays and seasonal hours

Many businesses near the beaches, and plenty of cafés across the city, change their hours over summer and around the Christmas and New Year break. Our listings show regular hours, so it is worth checking with the business during holiday periods.
